Chatrooms"Chatrooms in the 90's were a great place to waste time. They were the kind of place where you can be someone you're not; you could create a whole new life and no one knew any better. There was no Facebook, Linkedin or any decent way to stalk a person's background, so you could be whoever you wanted to be.
It was from here you could get attracted to the way someone typed. Someone you've never met, never even seen, yet it was easy to believe they completely understood you. It was easy to be lulled into thinking there was someone out there for everyone. Chatrooms in the 90's define much of the internet based etiquette we use today, such as how TYPING IN CAPITALS is considered shouting and lurking (not taking part in conversation) basically meant you were definitely a federal agent sending information back to the FBI." |
